Project: St.Michael Catholic School
Location: Belleville, ON
Owner: Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board
Heritage Consultant (Prime): +VG Architects
(Masonry Conservator): Trevor Gillingwater, TG Conservation Services Inc.

The project involved the major masonry restoration and conservation of this school which was built from Crookston limestone in the early 1900’s.

The masonry repairs which were executed over a three year period included the repointing of the existing exterior mortar joints, replacement of stone units, pinning of fractured stone, stone grafts (Dutchman), composite stone patching and resetting of the existing parapet cap stones to allow the installation of new lead coated copper flashing.

A masonry conservator was engaged to assist in the planning, preparation and execution of the masonry conservation aspects of the project. Through the assistants of the masonry conservator a supply of the replacement Crookston limestone was obtained from the quarry that supplied the original stone during construction more than 100 years ago.

This unique and exciting opportunity helped to ensure an exact match was achieved in the replacement of the stone.

The two crenellated turrets flanking the statue at the main entrance were dismantled and rebuilt to match the existing.

The statute located above the main entrance was repaired using various conservation and restoration techniques.
